Tips for Women Traveling Solo in India

When it comes to traveling alone in India, we should take some precautions. However, India is an amazing country, exploring solo is a great way to do it. It only requires taking some precautions it sounds scary when put a list the one below but believes me it’s quite simple and easy. In fact, we should take precautions whenever we are traveling anywhere in the world. India is also like other countries where you have to know some idea about the local languages (Hindi or English at least) Here are some tips, which I want to share with all the ladies those who plan to visit India:

Dress conservatively:

India is a traditional country where we have to think before wearing a too short dress in temples and traditional places. That doesn’t mean you need to be covered head to toe, but shorts paired with a tank top are not advisable. If you are plani9ng to traveling in the summer, then chose loose cotton clothing that breathes and shields from skin burn works better for the weather too. Keep a scarf handy on your back for additional cover-up if needed in some situations.
In terms of hotel booking. If your destination has an affordable hotel by a reputable chain, book the first night there so you have a safe landing spot to launch your explorations from.

Don’t compromise on your safety to save money:

If I try to book the cheapest room, always give the first priority to your safety. These things apply to India: Do your research and go to a recommended place.

Keep a friend or family member apprised of your travel plans

Create a system to check in regularly, say once in three days. Even a Whatsapp message or Facebook post will do the trick. Get a local SIM card with data from your phone, it doesn’t cost much.

Precautions fortravelingat night:

In most places, it is best not to risk out alone after dark. While booking flights, trains, and buses, choose options that get you to your destination in daylight. If it's unavoidable to have someone from your hotel/Homestay come meet you.
In case if you’re alone in a cab, a rickshaw and the driver tries to take a friend along, say no. If they don’t agree, get a different taxi/rickshaw immediately.
In India, most public transport has spaces just for women, look for these.

Most staring is just curiosity

Try to ignore it. If it bothers you, politely tell the person not too. If it continues, and you feel trouble is waiting, don’t hesitate to make a loud scene.

One of the most important information for women is… If you need a help or not feeling safe due to any incident. You can also dial 100, the number for the police that works across India. Several big cities and tourist spots have squads dedicated to addressing women’s safety concerns. There are Women Helpline available in each and every city before traveling you can a make a note for all those things

Do remember, these precautions are only meant to protect you in case that something offensive happens. Have a good time, and have plenty of conversation, India is vast and beautiful country and Indian people will make your trip extra special. Most Indians are welcoming, chatty, and happy to share their life stories. Go for it, ladies!
